The goals that underlie many of the features of IPng are similar to those of the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) standard of the ITU (International Telecommunications Union, previously the CCITT). Although the data communications and telecommunications industries are converging towards a single digital communications technology and market the realisation of ATM and IPng is very different. The design of each reflects its history and current market.
Some researches seriously doubt that the two can live together at all well. Time, and the inventiveness of the Internet community, will tell.
